8 claims · checked both ways
The myth files.
Things people say with total confidence about Macs and PCs, checked one at a time. Some of them are wrong in the house's favour, and those get scored the same way.
- False“Macs don't get viruses”They do. Less malware is written for macOS, largely because it runs on fewer desktops — that's a different claim.
- Mostly false“Macs are always more expensive”Not at the entry point — a base Mac mini is genuinely competitive. It becomes true the moment you touch the upgrade options.
- Mostly false“You can't game on a Mac”You can, and the native library is far bigger than its reputation. What you can't count on is most competitive multiplayer.
- It's complicated“Macs are better for creative and design work”It was true, then the software went cross-platform. What survives is colour consistency, a few Mac-only apps, and industry habit.
- It's complicated“Windows is bloated and slow”Windows itself is fine. What manufacturers preinstall on top of it, and what Microsoft puts in the Start menu, is the real complaint.
- Mostly true“Macs just work”For the common path, genuinely yes. The cost is that when you want off that path, there often isn't one.
- False“You need a Mac for programming”Only for Apple platforms. WSL2 ended the general version of this argument, and for local machine learning a Mac is the wrong tool.
- Mostly false“Apple deliberately slows old machines to force upgrades”No credible evidence of this on Macs. The iPhone battery throttling case was real, badly disclosed, and a different product.
