Neither wins outright, which is why this site scores it round by round. Macs lead on battery life, trackpads and build consistency; Windows leads on gaming, price range and hardware choice. The honest answer depends on which rounds you actually care about.
Windows, comfortably. It has the largest native game library, DirectX support and the broadest GPU options. Apple has pushed hard with Metal and the Game Porting Toolkit, and more studios ship Mac builds than they used to, but the catalogue is still far smaller.
Both are strong, in different ways. macOS is Unix-based, so most web and backend toolchains work with no setup, and iOS development requires a Mac because Xcode only runs on macOS. Windows answers with WSL2 for Linux tooling, and it's the natural home for .NET and Windows-native work.
At the entry point, yes — Apple has no budget tier, so the cheapest Mac costs more than the cheapest capable PC. Spec-for-spec at the high end the gap narrows, and Apple's storage and memory upgrades stay expensive. Windows simply covers a far wider price range.
Generally yes. Apple silicon's performance-per-watt still leads, and MacBooks routinely run a full working day. Windows laptops on efficient ARM and x86 chips have closed much of the gap, so the answer is less lopsided than it was a few years ago.
Not on modern Apple silicon Macs — memory is on the same package as the processor and storage is soldered, so whatever you buy is what you keep. Most Windows desktops and many Windows laptops still let you swap RAM and SSDs after purchase.
Both ship serious protections — Gatekeeper, XProtect and FileVault on one side, Defender and BitLocker on the other. macOS has historically seen less malware aimed at it, helped by a smaller share of desktops, but neither platform is immune and both depend on you keeping them updated.
Yes, in a virtual machine. Apple silicon Macs run Windows 11 on ARM through hypervisors such as Parallels, which Microsoft has supported since 2023. Boot Camp, which dual-booted Intel Macs into Windows natively, is not available on Apple silicon.
